Honoring Women On The Path On this day dedicated to the recognition of women, it is fitting to reflect on a profound moment in spiritual history that took place more than 2,500 years ago in the time of Gautama Buddha. In the culture of ancient India, it was unimaginable for women to leave household life in order to pursue a path of full spiritual dedication. The search for liberation was essentially reserved for men, while women carried the responsibilities of family life and the labor of daily survival. Yet a remarkable turning point occurred in the early Buddhist community. Mahapajapati Gotami- the Buddha’s aunt and foster mother, who lovingly raised him after the passing of his mother, approached the Buddha with the sincere request, that women too, be allowed to leave the household life and join the monastic order in pursuit of awakening. She came not alone, but accompanied by a retinue of women who shared the same deep aspirations for the Dharma. At first, the Buddha hesitated. According to the early traditions, the request was declined. It was then that Ananda, one of the closest disciples of the Buddha and attendant that compassionately asked an essential question: if women are equally capable of realizing awakening, why then should they not be permitted to walk the same path men? The Buddha acknowledged that women indeed have the same capacity for liberation. Through the perseverance of Mahapajapati Gotami and the compassionate advocacy of Ananda, the Buddha finally opened the monastic path to women. Thus Mahapajapati Gotami became the first bhikkhuni, the first Buddhist nun. What followed was extraordinary. Many of these early women practitioners attained deep realization. Their teachings and verses, preserved in ancient texts express profound insight into impermanence, freedom, and awakening. In a world, time and place where women were rarely given, if at all a voice and an opportunity to dedicate their lives to spiritual practice, they became respected teachers, exemples of wisdom and transmitters of the Dharma itself. Their courage to break the mold and their determination remind us that the capacity for awakening is not bound by gender, status or circumstance. The Dharma has and will always belong to all who sincerely seek truth. In reflecting on this part in the history today, I personally feel deep gratitude for the moment I was entrusted with the keys of the lineage, the mystery school deepest teachings, through direct experience. To date, it had only been passed down to men. To receive this responsibility carries a profound sense of humility and gratitude. It is not a personal achievement, but a continuation of a long, beautiful and sacred unfolding. I am reminded of the verses of Therigatha, one of the enlightened nuns of that time, expressing the freedom discovered on the path: “So freed! So thoroughly freed am I- freed from the crooked things: from mortar, from pestle, and from my crooked old husband. Freed from birth and death, the cycle of becoming is ended.” Mahapajapati Gotami and those first women stepped forward with courage to walk the path.
