Its founder, Siddhartha Gautama, became known as the Buddha, which means
“awakened one.” His teachings spread across Asia and later reached the wider
world. Over time, three main branches took shape: Theravada, Mahayana, and
Vajrayana. Each developed in its own region. </p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1.125em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt;" class="">Each has its own emphasis and goal. All three share the
Four Noble Truths, and all three aim to end suffering. Their paths differ in
how they train the mind, develop wisdom, and cultivate kindness. Monks, nuns,
and lay followers in each branch preserve the teachings through study and
practice.</p><h2 style="color:inherit;margin:1.414em 0 .5em;font-weight:400;line-height:1.25em;font-size:1.9439999999999997em;mso-line-height-alt:1.9439999999999997em;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;letter-spacing:-.03em;text-align:center;margin-top:14pt;"><strong>The Four Noble Truths</strong></h2><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1.125em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt;" class="">The Four Noble Truths are the foundation of Buddhist

The central practice is vipassana. A student observes the breath, the body,
